1. (높임말로) 남자가 형제나 친척 형제들 중에서 자기보다 나이가 많은 남자를 이르거나 부르는 말.

1. OLDER BROTHER: (honorific) A word used only by a male to refer to or address his male siblings or cousins older than himself.

🗣️ 용례:
  • 나는 형이 결혼을 하고 나서부터는 형을 형님이라고 불렀다.
    I've called him brother ever since he got married.
  • 부모님은 같은 형제인데 왜 저렇게 다르냐며 항상 나와 형님을 비교하신다.
    My parents always compare me and my brother, asking why they are so different when they are brothers.

  • 나는 형이라고 부르기에는 나이가 많은 선배를 형님이라고 부른다.
    I call my elder brother, who is old enough to call him my brother.

  • 나는 나보다 나이가 어린 아내의 오빠를 형님이라고 부르는 것이 매우 어색했다.
    It was very awkward for me to call my wife's brother, who was younger than me, my brother.
  • 아내는 오빠가 셋이나 있어서 나는 결혼을 하는 동시에 세 명의 형님이 생겼다.
    My wife has three brothers, so i have three brothers at the same time as i get married.

  • 나는 나이가 어린 시누이가 형님 행세를 하는 것이 매우 못마땅했다.
    I was very displeased that my younger sister-in-law was acting like a brother.
  • 나는 시댁 식구들과 사이가 좋지 않은데 특히 남편 누나인 형님과 사이가 안 좋다.
    I am not on good terms with my in-laws, especially with my brother, who is my husband's sister.

6. 나이가 많은 친한 여자들 사이에서 나이가 적은 사람이 나이가 많은 사람을 이르거나 부르는 말.

6. OLDER SISTER: A word used by an old woman to refer to or address another female older than herself in a friendly manner.

🗣️ 용례:
  • 나는 옆집에 사는 여자를 형님으로 부르며 서로 친하게 지내다가 내가 이사를 가게 되면서 연락이 끊어졌다.
    I used to call the woman next door my brother and get along with each other, but lost contact when i moved out.
  • 나는 이웃에 사는 여자와 친해지면서 서로 형님 아우 하는 사이가 됐다.
    When i became friends with a woman living next door, i became brothers to each other.
  • ♔ 형님, 요새 옆집 지수 형님 안 보이던데 무슨 일 있대요?
    Brother, i haven't seen jisoo next door lately. is something wrong?
    ♕ 어머님 돌아가셔서 급하게 시골 내려갔잖아.
    Your mother died and you rushed down the country.
